Lake Maggiore
There are plenty of opportunities for great walks with breath taking views by Lake Maggiore and the surrounding area, which is of outstanding natural beauty.
There is no doubt that Stresa, known worldwide as the “gem of Lake Maggiore”, is the heart and pride of the region. The town’s many beautiful villas have fantastic gardens with flowers. A short trip by ferry will take you to the Borromean Islands.
Year after year, Isola Bella enchants tourists and residents with its Baroque mansion and Italian gardens (37 metres high).
Isola Madre, with its enormous botanical garden, is a unique destination for the lovers of rare plants, flowers and wildlife in general.
Isola Pescatori, the last of the three islands, is the most unusual and the only one to have people living on it all year round.
Mount Mottarone towers above Stresa. A spectacular and breath taking view of the Alps – including Mount Rosa, the Pianura Padana (flatlands) and the seven lakes - can be admired from the mountain top.
In the lower region of Lake Maggiore is Arona, which welcomes visitors with its majestic "sancarlone", a large, 35-metre statue of the town’s patron saint, San Carlo.
The towns of Angera (with a fortress), Verbania and Baveno, on the Lombardy shores of the lake, have some of the best walking routes in the area. There are hundreds of other places to discover – a holiday here will be impossible to forget.
